Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Mask Review: The Thick Night Cream That Melts on Skin

Bonjour! This is J., documenting a beautiful life.
This is a genuine review of a product I bought with my own money.

The Kiehl’s Cream Series, Part Two

Following the Calendula Water Cream, the second one is this: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Rehydrating Mask with 10.5% squalane. As the name says, it’s a night-only product — for nighttime use only.

Mine was bought in Canada, so one side of the label is in French. I’m using the 28 ml mini size.

Open the Jar: A Thick Balm You Can’t Scoop Without a Spatula

Open the jar and it’s a thick, balm-type formula. You can hardly scoop it without a spatula.

But Then the Twist! It Melts With Body Heat Like a Gel Cream

But once you apply it, it melts with your skin and hand temperature and glides on pleasantly. The thick balm melts into something soft that spreads like a gel cream. That twist is fascinating.

⚠️ Portion Control Is Everything! Too Much = Greasy Face

It’s quite oily, so if you scoop too much at once and slap it on, you’ll fail the portion control and end up with a completely greasy face. Take small amounts and melt it on. Just remember that one thing!

Strongly Recommended For

Anyone with extremely dry skin, or whose cheeks and jawline crack in deep winter — strongly recommended. It’s my pick from late fall through early spring.

⚠️ One Warning: It Leaves Face Marks on Your Pillow

Let the cream absorb fully before you sleep. Otherwise it can leave face marks on your pillow. I sleep on my side, and once when I was lazy and went to bed right after a hasty application, there was a cheek print on my pillow right away. Just watch out for that!

For Oily Skin, It May Feel Too Heavy

It may feel very heavy on oily skin, so I personally wouldn’t recommend it. If only your T-zone is oily, I recommend skipping the T-zone when you apply it.

Price Reference

In Korea, it sells for around ₩69,000 (100 ml). (Based on Gmarket Shinsegae official; sale prices vary.)

Exactly How I Apply It

This is the last step of the night, after toner, serum, and cream — everything else goes first. I take a rice-grain to pea-sized amount on the spatula, warm it between my palms for a few seconds until it softens, then press it onto my cheeks, jawline, and around the mouth. I deliberately skip the T-zone, which gets oily enough on its own. Warming it first is the key move; applied cold straight from the jar, it drags.

Then I wait. I do not go straight to bed — I give it a good 15 to 20 minutes while I read or wind down. This is non-negotiable for me after the pillow-print incident. By the time the lights go out, it has settled into the skin and the transfer risk is mostly gone.

The Morning After — What I Actually See

The difference is most obvious on winter mornings when the bedroom air is dry from the heating. My cheeks look rested instead of crepey, and the fine dry lines around my mouth are less visible. It is not a miracle — it is just very good occlusion doing its quiet job overnight. Makeup the next morning applies noticeably smoother, especially foundation around the nose and chin where dryness usually ruins the finish.

Mask vs. Night Cream — When I Choose Which

I do not use this every night. In winter it is my heavy artillery two to three nights a week; on the other nights a regular night cream is plenty. Think of it as the difference between a daily moisturizer and a treatment — this is the treatment. Using it nightly would be overkill for my skin and would burn through the jar fast. Two to three times a week is the sweet spot where I see results without waste.

The Honest Downsides, All in One Place

Let me collect every caveat in one spot. One: the portion-control learning curve is real — too much and you are a grease slick, so start tiny. Two: the pillow risk, already covered — give it time to absorb. Three: jar hygiene — I use the spatula religiously and never double-dip with fingers, and I wish it came in a tube. Four: on humid nights this is simply too rich; it is a cold-season product and it knows it. None of these are dealbreakers for me, but you deserve the full picture.

Verdict

A thick night-only balm with a surprisingly melty application. As long as you control the amount and give it time to absorb, it’s the best ally for the dry season.

Back with the third cream next time.
