Your Old IKEA BRIMNES Dresser Could Be Worth Cash — Here’s How to Check (US & Canada Recall Guide, 2026)

💰 Got an IKEA BRIMNES dresser at home? It might be worth IKEA store credit — even without a receipt. BRIMNES was part of IKEA’s massive 2016 dresser recall over tip-over hazards, and IKEA is still honoring it in 2026.

But BRIMNES has a trick the other models don’t: you can tell if yours is recalled just by looking at the bottom bar.

Here’s everything you need to check yours in about 5 minutes.

🚨 Why Was BRIMNES Recalled?

Like MALM, BRIMNES was included in IKEA’s 2016 recall over furniture tip-over risk. If a dresser isn’t properly anchored to the wall, a child climbing or pulling on it can cause it to tip forward — with potentially fatal consequences.

Health Canada’s recall notice covered children’s dressers over 60cm tall and adult dressers over 75cm tall that weren’t securely anchored. BRIMNES is on the official affected model list.

🔎 STEP 1: Identify Your BRIMNES Model

Canada’s official recall document lists BRIMNES in 4 configurations:

  • BRIMNES 2-drawer dresser — 50 × 77 cm — All colours
  • BRIMNES 3-drawer dresser — 78 × 95 cm — All colours
  • BRIMNES 4-drawer dresser, Narrow — 39 × 124 cm — All colours
  • BRIMNES 4-drawer dresser, Wide — 78 × 124 cm — All colours

⭐ The critical thing most people get wrong:

“Only white BRIMNES is recalled?” → No.

The official Canadian recall list marks these BRIMNES models as ALL COLOURS.

So don’t judge by colour alone. Check the model, size, and date stamp together.

🧐 STEP 2: Look at the Bottom Bar

Stand in front of your BRIMNES and look at the very bottom, near the floor — the base bar.

🔴 Recalled version: The bottom bar is recessed (set back) — it sits behind the front face of the bottom drawer, looking tucked in.

🟢 Fixed (non-recalled) version: The bottom bar is flush with the bottom drawer — it comes out to almost the same line as the drawer front.

👀 Remember it like this:

🔴 Indented bottom bar = possibly recalled
🟢 Bottom bar in line with drawer = likely the fixed version

⚠️ But don’t stop at the base alone. For an official determination in Canada, the model and manufacturing date matter too. If it’s ambiguous, IKEA can confirm for you.

🔢 STEP 3: Find the Date Stamp

After checking the base, look for the date stamp. IKEA’s current US recall guidance uses date code below “1622” as the 2016 recall-era identifier. For example, 1548 generally means week 48 of 2015.

Where to look: Under the top panel, inside the side panel, or the manufacturing label inside the product.

🇨🇦 STEP 4: Canadian Recall Terms

Under IKEA Canada’s current guidance, dressers manufactured January 2002 – June 2016 qualify for full store credit. At the time of the 2016 Canadian recall announcement: Jan 2002 – June 2016 manufacture → full store credit; manufactured before 2002 → partial store credit.

So even a very old BRIMNES isn’t automatically worthless. Check the date stamp first.

💳 STEP 5: No Receipt? You Can Still Get Credit

🇨🇦 Yes! IKEA Canada does not require a receipt to issue store credit for a recalled dresser. If you have proof of purchase, you may be eligible for a refund to your original payment method. Without proof of purchase, it’s processed as store credit.

🛑 Quick Visual Guide

🔴 Recalled: Bottom bar recessed (set back), bottom looks tucked in
🟢 Fixed version: Bottom bar flush with bottom drawer, flows cleanly with drawer front

📌 This is a quick visual guide only. For Canada, model + manufacturing date + IKEA’s official confirmation together give the most accurate answer.

🪑 What To Do If Yours Is Recalled

A recalled dresser that isn’t properly anchored should not be used — keep children away from it. IKEA Canada provides instructions for securely anchoring the product to the wall and for returning it for a refund/store credit. Don’t just sell it or pass it on — Health Canada states that reselling or giving away recalled products is prohibited in Canada.

👜 BRIMNES CHECKLIST — Before You Go to IKEA

  • ☐ Confirm it’s a BRIMNES (2 / 3 / 4 drawers?)
  • ☐ Check the dimensions
  • ☐ Note the colour — colour is NOT a limiting factor
  • ☐ Is the bottom bar recessed or flush with the bottom drawer?
  • ☐ Check under the top panel and inside the side panel
  • ☐ Find the date stamp / manufacturing date
  • ☐ Bring your receipt if you have one (don’t give up if you don’t)
  • ☐ If unsure, get final confirmation from IKEA Customer Service

🪙 PENNIES FROM HEAVEN — Today’s Takeaway

If you have a BRIMNES at home, spend 5 minutes tonight. Before opening and closing drawers, look at the bottom bar first. Is it indented? If so, check the date stamp and model. And in Canada especially, remember: you can go through the store credit process even without a receipt.

One old BRIMNES might not be just another piece of furniture you’re thinking of tossing — 🪙 it could be another Penny from Heaven.

But more important than the money is safety. If yours is recalled, start the return process or anchor it to the wall the way IKEA instructs. 🤍
